Finding Something Beautifully Different

I have eaten at countless restaurants, attended food events, and written about dining experiences for over a decade. Still, every once in a while, something comes along and genuinely surprises me. Studio Plantmaed in Calamba, Laguna, did exactly that.

Nestled in Purok Diez, Brgy. Bungo, this quiet studio-turned-dining-space is not your ordinary restaurant, and that is precisely what makes it extraordinary. It is not trying to be trendy or mainstream. It is simply, confidently, and artfully doing its own thing, and that thing happens to be raw, plant-based nutrition food elevated to an experience.

Raw, Plant-Based, and Unapologetically Unique

Studio Plantmaed specializes in raw plant-based nutrition food, a philosophy that celebrates the inherent life force in uncooked, whole, plant-derived ingredients. This is not your weekend salad bar. Think living cuisine: dishes crafted to preserve enzymes, maximize nutrients, and honor ingredients in their most natural, vibrant state.

What sets Studio Plantmaed apart is the way it marries this raw-food philosophy with creative culinary storytelling. The menu is not just healthy; it is imaginative, sophisticated, and deeply intentional. Each dish feels like a love letter to both the earth and the plate.

The Italian-Filipino Fusion Event

I was fortunate enough to be invited to a special themed dining event at Studio Plantmaed centered on an Italian-Filipino fusion experience yesterday, June 12, 2026, in celebration of the Philippines' Independence Day. The concept was bold and brilliant: take the warmth and soul of Filipino cuisine, weave it into the structure and elegance of Italian cooking traditions, and express it all through a raw, plant-based lens.

From the moment we were seated, the atmosphere felt curated, thoughtful, intimate, and warm. This was clearly a space where food is treated as an art form, and the evening unfolded like a beautifully composed tasting menu.

The Dishes: A Journey Through Each Plate

1. Kinilaw Bruschetta

They opened with a Kinilaw Bruschetta. A brilliant collision of Filipino kinilaw tradition and Italian antipasto sensibility. Bright, acidic, and refreshing, it set the tone perfectly: this was going to be a meal that plays with your expectations and wins. The raw marinade technique from kinilaw met the structural simplicity of toasted artisan bread in a way that felt both familiar and completely new.

2. Raw Bulanglang Minestrone

Next came the Raw Bulanglang Minestrone. A dish that made my heart (and stomach) sing. Bulanglang, the beloved Filipino vegetable soup of Batangas, reimagined as an Italian minestrone but kept entirely raw. The vegetables were crisp, the broth deeply layered with flavor, and the whole bowl felt alive. It was comfort food in its most honest, nutrient-dense form.

3. Rawtatouille Salad

A playful nod to the classic French-Italian ratatouille, the Rawtatouille Salad was a visual and textural feast. Beautifully arranged and dressed with what I can only describe as composed simplicity. Each vegetable layer contributed its own distinct character. It was the kind of dish that makes you slow down and actually look at your food before eating it. Crispy and satisfying is what they played here.

4. Pinamansi Cello

The Pinamansi Cello was one of those dishes that stopped conversation at the table. A Filipino-inspired limoncello reimagining, Pinamansi brings calamansi, the beloved local citrus, into a refreshing, palate-cleansing sip. Light, tangy, and effervescent in flavor, it was the kind of interlude that reminds you: the best food experiences are multi-sensory.

5. Raw Eggplant Cannelloni

This was my personal highlight of the evening. Raw Eggplant Cannelloni, thinly sliced, marinated eggplant used as the 'pasta' wrapper around a rich, raw filling, was nothing short of stunning. It challenged every preconception I had about what cannelloni needs to be. The texture was silky, the filling was savory and complex, and it proved, beyond any doubt, that raw plant-based cuisine can be genuinely indulgent.

6. Turon Tiramisu

We ended on an absolute high: Turon Tiramisu. Filipino turon, the beloved banana-jackfruit spring roll, met the creamy, coffee-kissed layers of Italy's most iconic dessert. I did not know I needed this combination in my life until I had it. It was sweet, surprising, and deeply satisfying,  the perfect closing act for an evening that was defined by creative courage.

Important: By Reservation Only

One thing you absolutely need to know before planning your visit — Studio Plantmaed is currently operating on a reservation basis. This is not a walk-in spot, and honestly, I think that makes the whole experience even more special. You are not just booking a table; you are reserving a place in a curated experience.

My strong advice: follow them on Instagram at @studioplantmaedph and Facebook at Studio Plantmaed to stay updated on event schedules, new menus, and reservation windows. Do not sleep on it; spots will fill up fast once word gets around, and trust me, it will.

A Space Worth Seeking Out

Studio Plantmaed is not trying to be everything to everyone, and that is its greatest strength. It is a space built on intention, creativity, and a genuine belief that food can nourish both the body and the spirit without compromising on flavor, beauty, or experience.

I am already planning my return visit, and this time I am bringing friends. Because some discoveries are too good to keep to yourself. If you have ever felt like mainstream dining has become predictable, if you crave something that genuinely surprises and delights, or if you are simply curious about what raw, plant-based cuisine can truly achieve. Studio Plantmaed is your answer.

Go. Reserve. Experience. And prepare to see food in a whole new light.

XOXO,
